Brian Korteling
This is one possibility for our chosen unsigned artist. He called Brian Korteling and is a local singer/songwriter which was one of the main reasons why we would have chosen him. Because he lives in Norwich would have made it much easier to get some raw footage of him playing at a gig, or even ask him to appear or be involved with our music video.
It is clear by this acoustic performance that he is naturally talented and has a great voice, however, this folk song was a little boring and we weren’t sure about the target audience demographic.
This is another one of his songs that he played at the Norwich Art’s Centre which has more of a rhythm and demonstrates his impressive guitar skills and musicianship. We quite liked this song but preferred and decided on another artist.
Ask Lydia
Another unsigned act we were going to chose was the band called Ask Lydia. They are again a local band that I know quite well as I used to go to school with them. I know that they are committed so it would have been easy to film them either playing at a gig or whatever location we would decide on. They are extremely talented musicians who have a retro vibe and could be compared to bands such as The Smiths and Joy Division.
This is the group performing the first single released called ABC. I personally think that the lead singer's (James Matthews-Hiskett) voice sounds like The Smith's lead singer Morrissey. These bands are very similar as they are the same genre of alternative rock/indie pop.
This is the music video for The Smiths singing 'This charming man'. It consists of a live performance which would definitely have been used for Ask Lydia's music video because it is typical for that to be included in this specific type of genre.
The New York Fund
The New York Fund were another unsigned act that appealed to me as I enjoyed their old rock'n'roll sound mixed with a fresh, indie feel.
This song is called 'The Guns of Camden Town' and features the band playing a live perfomance.

'I'll show you New York' song lyrics
These are the lyrics to our chosen song ‘I’ll show you New York ’ by Daniel Cope. The lyrics connote strong images of a man who’s in love with a girl and would do anything for her. For example, the lyric ‘crying when the world was at your feet’ suggests that this girl feels broken hearted about her past and wants to get away from her life. Daniel Cope is singing about how he’ll take her away from the pains of her past and show her a better life with him.
The sound of freedom is blowing on the wind,
Begging you to walk into the night,
Begging you to walk into the night.
And I felt sorry when I saw you lying there,
Crying when the world was at your feet,
Lent you my hand, lifted you up into the air
Whispered in your ear,
Come follow me.
I’ll show youLondon ,
I’ll show youRome ,
I’ll show youNew York ,
We’ll call it home,
Say you’ll come with me,
We’ll see the world,
With troubles behind us,
Oh, my beautiful girl.
The city skyline, cut into the stars,
Your hand was pressing firmly into mine,
The people around us all begin to come alive,
As the music plays the rhythm wakes the night,
The music plays the rhythm wakes the night.
And I felt sorry when I saw you lying there,
Crying when the world was at your feet,
Lent you my hand, lifted you up into the air
Whispered in your ear,
Come follow me.
I’ll show youLondon ,
I’ll show youRome ,
I’ll show youNew York ,
We’ll call it home,
Say you’ll come with me,
We’ll see the world,
With troubles behind us,
Oh, my beautiful girl.
With troubles behind us,
Oh, beautiful girl,
My beautiful girl.
You felt abandoned, lying on the stairs
Knowing your lover’s inside.
I’ll show you
I’ll show you
I’ll show you
We’ll call it home,
Say you’ll come with me,
We’ll see the world,
With troubles behind us,
Oh, my beautiful girl.
The city skyline, cut into the stars,
Your hand was pressing firmly into mine,

And I felt sorry when I saw you lying there,
Crying when the world was at your feet,
Lent you my hand, lifted you up into the air
Whispered in your ear,
Come follow me.
I’ll show you
I’ll show you
I’ll show you
We’ll call it home,
Say you’ll come with me,
We’ll see the world,
With troubles behind us,
Oh, my beautiful girl.
With troubles behind us,
Oh, beautiful girl,
My beautiful girl.

Plot, Camera Angles and Split Screen Ideas
1. Train comes into the station (Mid-shot of train)
2. Daniel Cope is sitting at the train station listening to his MP3 player with headphones in staring at the ground then looking up at the sound of the train. (Close up of Dan)
3. Dan walks onto the train (Over the shoulder shot of him stepping onto the train)
4. Dan walks through the train corridor (Mid shot of him walking then point of view shot of him seeing Paige)
5. He sits down, glances at Paige then looks out of the window, beginning his day dream (Close up of Dan looking out of the window, music starts playing)
As soon as the music starts playing Daniel Cope (Thomas Block) goes into his day dream on the train. A shot of Dan playing guitar in his bedroom replaces the one of him on the train which then goes into a split screen of Dan and Paige in various places together. We got this idea from a variety of music videos that relate to our genre and target audience such as ‘hey there Delilah’ by ‘The Plain White Ts’. This is a song about a couple and how even though they are both in different countries they are still together. The split screen emphasises the distance of the places but also how they are together at the same time.
This music video also demonstrates the difference with colour and gives the lead singer a faded out sepia colour, indicating how his life is dull without her. The bottom screen of the girl is in a dark blue/icy colour to illustrate isolation and also the colour blue connotes coldness and that she maybe feels empty without him.
The lyrics:
'Hey there Delilah don't you worry about the distance
I'm right there if you get lonely give this song another listen
Close your eyes, listen to my voice it's my disguise
I'm by your side’ connote strong images of the two people being together and what it would be like if they were with each other. It illustrates how much the singer cares for her, which appeals to a female audience as it treats women with respect.

Stereotypes
FindYourTribe.com is a website specifically designed to attract different types of social groups. It is based on youth research in the UK therefore determining the different social groups, for example, chavs and indie scenesters.
This is my result of the 'Find Your Tribe' test. It asks you a series of questions to find out which group best suits your personality.
TOWNIE
This is my result of the 'Find Your Tribe' test. It asks you a series of questions to find out which group best suits your personality.
TOWNIE
You are a Townie! Your job might be a bit boring but it brings home the bacon and helps you save up for those two weeks away to Spain. Your weekends are set in stone – trip to the shops in town, buy yourself something nice, head to the All Bar One with friends, have a laff, maybe go for a club, as long as there’s none of the indie weirdo music. Keep it straight, you say.
This is the result of my target audience for my artist Daniel Cope.
CRAFT KID
CRAFT KID
You are a Craft Kid! You can’t remember the last time you bought a new piece of clothing – you’d much rather knit for six years than buy a jumper off the peg. It’s so much better for the environment and you like something unique. Hence your love of vintage – tea sets, floral dresses, aprons and matinee idols are your interests. Young fogey style is here again.
In my opinion this result is pretty accurate in the sense that Daniel Cope's 'followers' would wear floral dresses and be quite environmantally friendly.

In some ways this particular music video is conventional as it involves the members of the band, and although they are not playing their instruments, they are included in the video. The camera is panning around the room, not using a variety of shots which is an unconventional aspect of music videos.
This music video is somewhat conventional as it portrays a particular story which many music videos do. It also features the artists miming the words and choreographed dance routines which are common aspects of music videos. However, this video is quite different to others as the story is more prominant and doesn't necessarily fit with the lyrics.
I Was a Teenage Satan Worshipper - Amsterdamned from Teemu Niukkanen on Vimeo.
This video is unconventional as it doesn't use the artist or has any specific dance routines or lip syncing. It is interesting as it fits with the lyrics.
